Stephenson's Cottage (1750-)

Opened on the Tourist - Attractions.

Description

This cottage, the Grade II listed National Trust , was located by the Wylam Waggonway, running from Wylam Colliery to the River Tyne on the south side of the cottage. George Stephenson was born here in 1781 and grew up by the waggonway.

The cottage's former name is High Streethouse, being just west of Streethouse.

The cottage retains period features, such as sleeping drawers for children under the bed, a tea room and shop.

The waggonway became the Scotswood, Newburn and Wylam Railway in 1876 which closed in 1968. North Wylam station was to the west in Wylam itself.
